We are working!
Today, Door Step School works in some of the most underserved and vulnerable pockets of Mumbai and Pune. In Mumbai the city’s poorest wards such as the M-East Ward. In these areas, high levels of poverty, migration, informal labour, and inadequate access to public services result in large numbers of out-of-school and street-connected children. Our presence spans 14 municipal wards, covering more than 50 locations across street settlements, slum clusters, pavements, construction sites, transit areas, and neighbourhoods with a visible concentration of children living and working on the streets.

Each year, Door Step School reaches over 1.5 lakh children, many of whom are first-generation learners with disrupted schooling histories. These include children of migrant workers, pavement dwellers, families engaged in informal occupations, and communities facing frequent displacement—groups that are often excluded from the formal education system.
To ensure both access and continuity of learning, we work closely with over 100 municipal and low-fee private schools that cater to children from vulnerable backgrounds. Our engagement with schools focuses on enrolment support, remedial education, foundational literacy and numeracy, teacher capacity building, and sustained follow-up to prevent dropouts. We partner with private schools where they serve low-income communities and act as critical entry points for children transitioning from non-formal to formal education.
In Pune, Door Step School implements both community-based and school-based interventions, reaching children living at construction sites and other vulnerable settlements through multiple programmes, and impacting nearly 18,000 children each year.
Beyond Mumbai, Door Step School also implements impactful rural education programmes in Raigad district, Maharashtra, extending our work to regions where geographic isolation and limited infrastructure create additional barriers to schooling.
As a solution-driven organisation, we are currently in a phase of strategic expansion, actively exploring new geographies, partnerships, and collaborations with government systems, schools, and civil society organisations to scale proven models and respond to emerging educational needs.
Our commitment remains steadfast: to work where exclusion is highest and ensure that no child is denied education because of where they live or the circumstances they are born into.
