We are working!
Yes, we are a registered non-governmental organization (NGO) under Society Registration Act 1860 and Mumbai Public Trust Act 1950 . We also have an FCRA (Foreign Contribution Registration Act) which is a mandatory certification for NGOs in India that allows them to legally receive foreign contributions (donations, grants, etc.) from foreign sources.
We primarily work with children aged 3 to 18 who live in vulnerable, high-mobility or low-income communities in Mumbai and Pune. Many are first-generation learners or out-of-school children.
Yes. We are a registered NGO under 80-G Income Tax Exemption Act which will enable you to get a tax certificate for your donation/financial assistance.
Yes, our full-time employees are given regular salaries – we believe that this is important to attract the professional talent we need to manage our activities effectively. However, it is important to note that the salaries are very modest in comparison with commercial corporate organisations
We assess communities based on:
Community participation is central to our approach. We:
Yes. Collaborating with local NGOs, Community Based Organizations, and government departments strengthens our reach and ensures long-term sustainability of our programs.
Absolutely. We encourage communities to reach out. Each request goes through a needs and feasibility assessment before approval.
We help children prepare for Grade 1, assist with school enrolment, provide remedial classes, offer transportation where needed, and engage families to ensure continued attendance.
School on Wheels is a bus converted into a mobile classroom that travels to multiple locations each day. It provides structured learning for out-of-school children who have no access to safe or consistent educational spaces.
We track attendance, learning levels, school enrolment, retention, and children’s progress across programmes. Continuous monitoring and assessments help us improve quality and ensure accountability.
Door Step School follows strict child protection guidelines. Staff are trained in safe practices, and all programmes are designed to provide safe, inclusive and supportive environments.

By donating to The Society for Door Step School, you directly support children who are among the most underserved in urban India — those living in slums, on streets, in temporary settlements and in highly mobile communities. These children often face serious barriers to accessing education, and without timely support, many are pushed into early labour, irregular schooling or complete exclusion from the system.
Your contribution enables us to bring education to their doorstep through community-based classes, mobile schools, early-learning programmes, libraries, digital learning centres, remedial support and mental-health interventions. Every rupee helps a child enter school, stay in school and succeed in school.
Most importantly, Door Step School has a proven track record of over three decades, transparent operations, rigorous monitoring and a child-centred approach that ensures your support creates tangible, long-term impact. When you donate, you’re not funding a programme — you’re opening a pathway to learning, confidence and opportunity for a child who needs it most.
If you are a local donor based in India, we might be able accept cash donations or donations in kind. However, we will need to complete all the formalities for the same. Kindly write to us at Mumbai@doorstepschool.org for more information.
